What To Wear For Engagement Photos

Spring is coming and wedding season is almost among us! It’s also the perfect season for engagement sessions.

Engagement sessions are my favorite! (Aside from wedding days of course!) It gives couples a chance to get comfortable in front of my camera before they are married, which helps make wedding day photos a breeze! Not only that, but it gives me the chance to get to know my couples and tell their story.

Once the engagement session date is chosen and location is finalized, the first and most common question I get is “What should we wear?!”.  I know there must be more ladies out there wondering the same thing. (I know I did!) So today I am sharing tips that I give my brides to help them choose outfits for their session.

Keep it simple

Choose timeless pieces that won’t go out of style. How do you do that?Avoid clothing with writing on them, logos or super trendy pieces.

Over-coordination is for the birds

Don’t get too “matchy matchy” with your outfit and your fiancés. Doing this can make the photo look too busy and draw the focus away from the two of you.

Example: If your guy is wearing a plaid or patterned button up, choose one of the colors in his shirt and wear something solid in that color like a dress or dress shirt. This will help you look coordinated but not overdone.

Choose The Right Colors

When choosing your outfit colors opt for more neutrals or lighter tones in the spring and summer months. During the winter months our backdrops are more dull so I suggest deeper dark colors to keep from blending in with the background. Avoid really bright colors like neons, they can be distracting and take the focus away from the two of you.

Dress it up!

There is no such thing as too dressed up when it comes to your engagement session. That long dress, tulle skirt or flower crown you’ve been eyeing on Pinterest is meant for moments like this! Don’t be afraid to have some fun choosing dressier pieces that you don’t get the chance to wear nearly enough.

For him – choose a dress shirt, sports coat or blazer to dress up his outfit.

More than one outfit

This is something I love to encourage because it gives more variety and personality to the session. Most of my couples choose one dressier outfit and one casual outfit.

Three Quarter Length Sleeves

Three quarter length sleeves are slimming and very flattering on women. Pair a three quarters length shirt with a tulle skirt or find a dress with 3/4 length sleeves.

Heels for the win

If you’re a girl who lives in flats, I feel you! But hear me out on this one, wearing heels will elongate your legs, making them look amazing! And who doesn’t want to channel their inner Gisele?!

Nails

That beautiful ring will be in the spotlight so don’t forget to polish your nails!

Hair & Makeup

To look and feel your best, make sure you have time to do your hair and makeup so that you’re not rushed. Many of my brides make an appointment to have it done before the session which leaves them feeling pampered and beautiful.

If you’re prepping for an engagement session, I hope this helps a ton! If you have more questions, leave them below and I’ll get right back to you!
