Belize Day 7

I am seriously obsessed with learning about history. Take me to a museum and I’ll be content all day. Mayan ruins are fascinating to me. When I was in Mexico I visited a place called Tulum which is a Mayan ruins site along the Gulf of Mexico. So needless to say, I was very excited for this day.

Lubaantum “the place of fallen stones” is a Mayan ruins site close to where we stayed in the villages. When we got there I was expecting buildings statues just like Tulum. To my surprise most of the area was rubble. Here is the story… In the early 1900’s Thomas Gann (the areas chief medical officer) went to the site with questionable intentions. He basically destroyed the area which as resulted in little ruins left. There are restoration projects in place which has improved several areas like the ball court. Our tour guides daughter showed me around Lubaantum. She pointed out this chili pepper tree.. and stopped me before touching it!

This was also the first day staying in the villages. The whole group (21 of us!) stayed at Gustavo’s with his family. Gustavo was our tour guide Noemi’s brother. Gustavo brought us on a medicinal walk where we learned about using different plants for medicine. At one point during the walk he stopped and pulled up what I thought was a weed. Turns out if was Turmeric which creates a powerful anti-inflammatory effect. You may have seen this in your local vitamin shop.

The jungle in the village area was beautiful! I could fall asleep to a rainstorm in no time. Its no wonder rain forest sounds area used in sleeping devices….ZzZz….
